YOUTH DIRECTOR
Overall Description
The Covenant Youth Director (YD) is a part-time position focused on sustaining the Middle Agers Sunday school and fellowship program for Middle School and High School students. The group currently has 7 seven members. Responsibilities include coordinating planning and communications for this group, and providing secondary support for the Confirmation program led by the Interim Pastor and volunteers at COTC. The time frame for this position is September 2010 through May 2011, with the possibility that it may be extended into the next program year (beginning Sept-2011). This job description is subject to review and adjustment by the Christian Education and Personnel Committees.
Skills Needed
The YD position requires initiative and creativity in reaching out and engaging the youth of COTC and adult volunteers. An ability to communicate well and work respectfully together with adolescents is a must as well as working collegially with church staff, the Christian Education committee, parents, and the congregation. Organization, the ability to plan ahead, and the ability to effectively communicate with the youth, families, staff, and congregation are essential. Relevant experience and theological education are desired.
Review and Reporting
The YD is hired and employed by the Church Council. The YD is responsible to the Pastor for routine administrative tasks and is responsible programmatically to the Christian Education Committee. An Annual performance review will include input from other staff, the congregation, and committees.
Nature of the Position, Compensation / Conditions of Employment
Hiring and employment conditions will be governed by the Church of the Covenant Personnel Policy. The YD will be compensated at $18 per hour for 8 hours per week. No benefits or other compensation are provided.
The YD will be requested to log his/her time, and will be paid on a biweekly basis. Some weeks will require more than 8 hours and other weeks fewer but the YD will be expected to average 8 hours per week over a typical month. The Youth Director is expected to be present on Sunday mornings and the 8 Sunday evenings of Confirmation class. Variation from an 8 hour week or absence on a Sunday may only occur with the prior approval of the Interim Pastor and the Chair of the Christian Education Committee. The YD may take up to 3 Sundays per program year of compensatory time, to be agreed upon in advance with the Interim Pastor. The YD will arrange coverage for responsibilities in his/her absence.

Task Areas (Responsibilities)
*Teaching a Sunday School class for the Middle Agers with a variety of fellowship, service, and faith-deepening components, complementing the Confirmation curriculum taught on 8 Sunday evenings.
*Keeping youth engaged in the church, particularly worship, Confirmation class, and fellowship activities.
*Facilitating parental planning and leadership of fellowship events and service projects.
*Collaborating with the Interim Pastor and parental leadership teams to plan a summer trip for 2010.
* Coordinating Communication with the youth, families, staff, and congregation through regular emails and mailings, monthly newsletter articles, and other communications planned in coordination with other church leaders.
* Supporting the Confirmation classes by attending the 8 Sunday evening sessions and the final weekend retreat, supporting the youth as a conversation partner in their faith journeys, and creating Sunday morning activities to complement and deepen their faith and connections with one another.
The Youth Director will also
*attend CE meetings (approximately every 1 to 2 months)
*be available to meet with staff as needed
